Sulfentrazone

Type: Herbicide

Mode of Action: Inhibiting the enzyme protoporphyrinogen oxidase (PPO)

Common Product Names: Authority, Spartan, Dismiss

What is it?

Sulfentrazone is the common name used for an organic compound belonging to the aryl triazolinone herbicides. Sulfentrazone is a selective soil or foliar applied herbicide for control of annual broadleaf weeds and yellow nutsedge in a variety of crops and warm season grasses. Sulfentrazone suppresses some grass weeds; however additional control measures are usually required. It can be applied early preplant, preplant incorporated, or preemergence and is a component in several preemergence herbicide premixes. It was first marketed in the US in 1997 by FMC Corporation with the brand name Authority. Sulfentrazone has commonly been used as a solution for zombie weeds. Zombie weeds are weeds that seem to repeatedly come back from the dead year after year. Some common zombie weeds are: Yellow Nutsedge, Green Kullinga, Wild Violet and Ground Ivy. Sulfentrazone can eliminate these zombie weeds, sedges, broadleaf weeds, as well as cool season grasses such as Poa annua, Poa trivialis, and Tall fescue. This herbicide is commonly used in crops like soybeans, sunflowers, dry beans, and peanuts, as well as in non-crop areas and turf. Commonly used for nutsedge control in residential lawns.

How does it work?

When applied to the soil, sulfentrazone is absorbed by the roots and shoots of germinating weed seeds. It disrupts cell membranes by inhibiting the PPO enzyme, leading to rapid cell death.  The effects visible on whole plants are chlorosis and desiccation caused by the PPO inhibition. This leads to an accumulation of protoporphyrin IX in the plant cells. This is a potent photosensitizer which activates oxygen, leading to lipid peroxidation. This action is particularly effective on small-seeded broadleaf weeds and certain grassy weeds. When applied post-emergence, sulfentrazone is absorbed through the foliage, causing similar disruption to the targeted weeds. Both light and oxygen are required for this process to kill the plant.

Benefits

  • Broad-Spectrum Control: It effectively controls a wide range of broadleaf and grassy weeds, reducing the need for multiple herbicides.
  • Flexible Application: Sulfentrazone can be used both pre-emergence and post-emergence, providing flexibility in weed management strategies.
  • Residual Activity: It provides long-lasting residual control, reducing the frequency of herbicide applications.
