Triclopyr

Type: Herbicide

Mode of Action: Mimicking the plant hormone Auxin

Common Product Names: Remedy

What is it?

Triclopyr is a synthetic herbicide belonging to the pyridine group of chemicals. It was first registered for use in the United States in 1979. This herbicide is particularly valued for its ability to control difficult woody and broadleaf plants without damaging desirable grasses. Triclopyr is available in several formulations, including esters, amines, and acids, each suited to different application needs and environmental conditions.

How does it work?

Triclopyr works by interfering with the plant's growth hormone system. When applied, it is absorbed through the foliage and roots of the target plants. The herbicide then travels throughout the plant, mimicking the natural plant hormone auxin. This causes the cells to grow uncontrollably, disrupting normal cell functions and leading to the plant's death. Triclopyr is particularly effective on actively growing plants and can be applied as a foliar spray, soil treatment, or stump treatment for cut stumps.

Benefits

  • Selective Control: Triclopyr is highly selective, effectively targeting broadleaf weeds and woody plants while sparing grasses, making it ideal for use in pastures, lawns, and forests.
  • Versatility: Available in various formulations, Triclopyr can be used in multiple settings and applied using different methods, including foliar sprays and soil treatments.
  • Effectiveness on Tough Weeds: Triclopyr is particularly effective against hard-to-control species, such as poison ivy, kudzu, and certain invasive tree species, making it a valuable tool in both agricultural and non-agricultural settings.
