Trichlorfon

Type: Insecticide

Mode of Action: Inhibition of Acetylcholinesterase

Common Product Names: Dylox

What is it?

Trichlorfon is a crystalline organophosphate compound with high insecticidal properties. It is often employed in controlling a variety of pests, such as beetles, caterpillars, and certain species of flies and moths. Its effectiveness extends to both agricultural crops and livestock, as well as in domestic environments for controlling household pests.

How does it work?

The working mechanism of Trichlorfon revolves around its interference with the nervous system of insects. By inhibiting acetylcholinesterase, Trichlorfon causes an accumulation of acetylcholine at the nerve synapses. This accumulation results in continuous nerve impulse transmission, leading to over-stimulation of the insect's nervous system. Eventually, this over-stimulation causes the insect to become paralyzed and die. The selective toxicity of Trichlorfon ensures that it primarily affects insects, with minimal impact on non-target organisms when used as directed.

Benefits

  • Broad-Spectrum Control: Trichlorfon is effective against a wide array of insect pests, providing comprehensive protection for crops, livestock, and homes.
  • Quick Action: Due to its rapid mode of action, Trichlorfon ensures swift pest elimination, reducing the damage caused by infestations.
  • Versatility: Available in various formulations, Trichlorfon can be applied through different methods, including spraying, dusting, and soil incorporation, enhancing its utility in diverse scenarios.
