Carfentrazone

Type: Herbicide

Mode of Action: Inhibition of Protoporphyrinogen, N-Phenyl-triazolinones (HRAC Group 14)

Common Product Names: Aim EC & Quicksilver T&O

What is it?

Carfentrazone is a triazolinone herbicide developed by FMC Corporation. It falls under Group 14 according to the Herbicide Resistance Action Committee (HRAC). Carfentrazone is primarily a contact herbicide and is selective, targeting broadleaf weeds without harming grasses. It is used in a variety of settings, including in agriculture for crops like corn and soybeans, as well as in turf management. Carfentrazone is typically applied at a low use rate due to its high efficacy.

How does it work?

Carfentrazone works by inhibiting protoporphyrinogen oxidase (PPO), an enzyme crucial for chlorophyll production in plants. This inhibition leads to the accumulation of protoporphyrin IX, a compound that causes cell membrane destruction when exposed to light. As a result, the treated weeds experience rapid cell damage and desiccation, leading to their death. Visible effects of Carfentrazone on weeds can be observed within hours to a day after application, making it one of the fastest-acting herbicides available.

Benefits

The primary benefit of Carfentrazone is its rapid action against a broad spectrum of broadleaf weeds, including those resistant to other herbicide modes of action. It is especially effective against tough-to-control species like pigweed, waterhemp, and lambsquarters. Carfentrazone’s selectivity makes it ideal for use in mixed grass and broadleaf weed environments, such as golf courses and agricultural fields.
