What is it?
Clopyralid is a synthetic compound developed by Dow AgroSciences (now part of Corteva Agriscience). It belongs to the pyridine class of herbicides and is categorized under Group 4 by the Herbicide Resistance Action Committee (HRAC). Clopyralid is primarily a systemic herbicide, meaning it is absorbed by plants and transported throughout their tissues. It is selective, particularly effective against broadleaf weeds, including those in the Asteraceae and Leguminosae families. Its primary areas of use are in agriculture (such as in cereals, corn, and grasslands), lawns, turf, and range lands. The use rate of Clopyralid is generally low due to its high potency.
How does it work?
Clopyralid functions by mimicking the action of natural plant hormones (auxins). It disrupts normal plant growth processes, leading to abnormal and uncontrolled growth in susceptible broadleaf weeds, which eventually causes their death. This selective action allows Clopyralid to control weeds without harming grasses or other desired plants. The effects of Clopyralid on target weeds are usually visible within a few days to weeks after application.
