Aminopyralid

Type: Herbicide

Mode of Action: Mimicking the natural plant hormone auxin

Common Product Names: Chaparal, Grazon, Milestone & Opensight

What is it?

Aminopyralid is a member of the pyridine carboxylic acid family. It is a post emergent selective herbicide, primarily targeting broadleaf weeds, while being safe for grasses. This makes it an ideal choice for managing weeds in pastures and rangelands where preserving grass is crucial. Its chemical structure allows it to be effective at very low use rates, providing weed control. The visible effects on weeds can usually be seen within a few days to weeks after application, depending on the specific weed species and environmental conditions.

How does it work?

Aminopyralid interferes with the plant's growth hormones, specifically targeting the auxin pathway. When absorbed by the foliage, it translocates throughout the plant, causing abnormal growth and development. This results in the distortion of leaves, stems, and roots, ultimately leading to the plant's death. The herbicide is primarily effective post-emergence, meaning it is applied after the weeds have already emerged and are actively growing.

Benefits

  • Long Residual Activity: Offers extended control of weeds, reducing the need for frequent applications.
  • Post-Emergent Application: Effective when applied to actively growing weeds, ensuring timely weed control.
