Spinosad

Type: Insecticide

Mode of Action: Disruption in Neural Signals

Common Product Names: Conserve SC & Entrust

What is it?

Spinosad is a natural substance derived from the fermentation of a soil bacterium called Saccharopolyspora spinosa. It is a combination of spinosyn A and spinosyn D, which are metabolites produced by the bacterium. Spinosad is recognized for its effectiveness against a broad spectrum of insects and is considered environmentally friendly due to its low toxicity to non-target organisms, including humans, pets, and beneficial insects like bees.

How does it work?

Spinosad works primarily by ingestion and contact. When an insect comes into contact with Spinosad or ingests it, the active ingredient disrupts the function of the insect's nervous system. Specifically, Spinosad affects nicotinic acetylcholine receptors and GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) receptor function, which are crucial for nerve signal transmission. This leads to muscle contractions, tremors, paralysis, and eventually death. Insects typically stop feeding within minutes to hours after exposure, and death occurs within one to two days.

Benefits

  • Low toxicity to beneficial insects: Spinosad is relatively safe for pollinators and other beneficial insects when used according to label directions.
  • Residual control: Provides ongoing protection for up to 4 weeks, making it a long-term solution for pest control.
  • Resistance management: As a novel mode of action, Spinosad can be a useful tool in resistance management programs, helping to reduce the risk of pests developing resistance to other insecticides.
  • Fast-acting: Insects stop feeding shortly after exposure, with death occurring within 24-48 hours.
