Spinetoram

Type: Insecticide

Mode of Action: Disruption of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors

Common Product Names: Radiant

What is it?

Spinetoram is a second-generation spinosyn, derived from the fermentation of a naturally occurring soil bacterium, Saccharopolyspora spinosa. It has enhanced efficacy and spectrum of control compared to its predecessor, spinosad. Spinetoram is known for its rapid action and extended residual activity, making it an effective solution for managing insect pests.

How does it work?

Once ingested or contacted by the insect, Spinetoram activates the nicotinic acetylcholine receptors in the nervous system. This leads to continuous activation of nerves, muscle contractions, paralysis, and eventually the death of the insect. Spinetoram is effective against a wide range of pests, including thrips, leafminers, caterpillars, and fruit flies.

Benefits

  • Rapid Results: Insects typically stop feeding within minutes to hours after exposure, with death occurring within 1-2 days.
  • Extended Residual Control: Spinetoram offers residual control, meaning it remains effective for a period after application, reducing the need for frequent reapplications.
  • Selective Targeting: It has low toxicity to beneficial insects like bees and predators, making it a suitable option for integrated pest management (IPM) programs.
  • Resistance Management: As a Group 5 insecticide, it provides an alternative mode of action, helping to manage resistance in pest populations.
