24-D Amine
Type: Herbicide
Mode of Action: Mimics plant hormone Auxin
Common Product Names: Trimec, Weedar, & Weedzone
What is it?
2,4-D Amine (2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid) is a selective herbicide, targeting broadleaf weeds while leaving grasses largely unaffected. Introduced in the 1940s, it quickly became a staple in weed management due to its effectiveness and relatively low cost. 2,4-D Amine is available in several forms, including liquids and granules, making it versatile for different applications. It is commonly used in agricultural settings, particularly in cereal crops, corn, and pastures, as well as in residential and commercial lawn care.
How does it work?
2,4-D Amine works by disrupting the normal growth processes of susceptible plants. When applied, the herbicide is absorbed through the leaves and translocated throughout the plant. As a synthetic auxin, it overwhelms the plant's hormonal balance, leading to uncontrolled and abnormal cell division and elongation. This causes twisting, curling, and eventually, the death of the plant. The effects of 2,4-D Amine are typically visible within a few days to a week, depending on the weather and the type of plant targeted.
