Flumetsulam

Type: Herbicide

Mode of Action: Inhibiting the enzyme acetolactate synthase (ALS)

Common Product Names: Hornet & Python

What is it?

Flumetsulam is a selective, systemic herbicide primarily used to control broadleaf weeds. It is absorbed by the roots and shoots of plants and is translocated throughout the plant's system, concentrating in the growing points. As a post-emergent herbicide, Flumetsulam is applied after the emergence of both crops and weeds, targeting actively growing broadleaf weeds. The herbicide is highly effective against a wide variety of weeds, including lambsquarters, pigweed, and velvetleaf.

How does it work?

Flumetsulam works by inhibiting the ALS enzyme, crucial for amino acid production in plants. When this enzyme is blocked, the production of essential amino acids is halted, leading to the plant's inability to synthesize proteins necessary for growth. As a result, the weeds experience stunted growth and eventually die. Flumetsulam's mode of action is highly selective, meaning it targets specific weeds without harming the crops it is designed to protect.

Benefits

  • Selective Action: Flumetsulam targets broadleaf weeds while leaving crops like soybeans and corn unharmed.
  • Post-Emergent Application: It is effective when applied after the emergence of weeds, making it ideal for managing weeds that have already started growing.
  • Long Residual Control: Provides extended control of susceptible weeds, reducing the need for multiple applications.
  • Broad Spectrum: Controls a wide range of broadleaf weeds, including those resistant to other herbicides.
