Glyphosate

Type: Herbicide

Mode of Action: Inhibiting enzyme pathway known as the shikimic acid pathway

Common Product Names: Bucanner, Credit, Roundup, & Ranger Pro

What is it?

Glyphosate is a broad-spectrum, non-selective herbicide that is widely used in agriculture, horticulture, and landscape management. It is effective against a wide variety of grasses, broadleaf weeds, and woody plants. It is the most widely used herbicide. Glyphosate is applied post-emergence, meaning it is used on actively growing weeds rather than as a pre-emergent herbicide that is applied before weed seeds germinate. Glyphosate is commonly used to kill plants in noncrop areas or in crops designated as Glyphosate resistant.

How does it work?

Upon application, glyphosate is absorbed through the leaves and transported throughout the plant. It accumulates in the roots and growing points, disrupting the shikimic acid pathway by inhibiting the EPSPS enzyme. This disruption halts the production of essential amino acids, which are the building blocks of proteins required for plant growth and survival. As a result, the treated plants gradually weaken and die, typically showing visible signs of damage within a few days to a week.

Benefits

  • Systemic Action: Translocates throughout the plant, ensuring complete eradication of the target weed, including its root system.
  • Post-Emergent Application: Can be used effectively on actively growing weeds, making it suitable for post-emergent weed management.
  • Visible Results: Visible effects on weeds are typically seen within a few days, with complete weed death occurring within one to two weeks.
  • Wide Usage: Suitable for use in various settings, including agricultural fields, residential lawns, gardens, and industrial sites.
