Diquat

Type: Herbicide

Mode of Action: Disruption of cell membrane

Common Product Names: Aquacide & Reward

What is it?

Diquat dibromide is a quaternary ammonium herbicide that has been in use since the 1950s. It is highly soluble in water and is often used to control weeds in both aquatic and terrestrial environments. Diquat is particularly favored for its rapid action and effectiveness in a variety of settings, including crop fields, non-crop areas, and waterways. It’s also used as a desiccant in the harvest of certain crops like potatoes and oilseed rape.

How does it work?

When applied, Diquat targets the green parts of plants. Upon exposure to light, Diquat disrupts photosynthesis, leading to the production of reactive oxygen species. These reactive molecules cause cell membrane damage, which results in the rapid drying out and death of the plant. The effects of Diquat are often visible within hours of application, with full desiccation occurring within one to two days.

Benefits

  • Fast-acting: Visible effects within hours, full results within 1-2 days.
  • Non-selective: Useful for clearing a wide range of unwanted vegetation.
  • Low residual activity: Breaks down quickly in the environment, reducing the risk of long-term soil contamination.
