Imazapyr

Type: Herbicide

Mode of Action: Inhibiting the enzyme acetolactate synthase (ALS)

Common Product Names: Arsenal & Polaris

What is it?

Imazapyr is a systemic, non-selective herbicide belonging to the imidazolinone chemical family. Imazapyr provides both preemergence and postemergence control of weeds. It is widely used in both agricultural and non-agricultural settings to control a broad spectrum of annual and perennial grasses, broadleaf weeds, woody plants, and even some aquatic vegetation. This herbicide is particularly valued for its versatility and effectiveness in managing tough, invasive species that other herbicides might struggle to control. Results from applying Imazapyr can typically be observed within a few weeks, with complete control achieved over a month, depending on the target species and environmental conditions.

How does it work?

Imazapyr is absorbed by plants through their leaves and roots, then translocated throughout the plant. By inhibiting the ALS enzyme, it disrupts the production of branched-chain amino acids like valine, leucine, and isoleucine, which are vital for plant growth and development. The lack of these amino acids leads to the cessation of cell division and plant growth, ultimately resulting in plant death.

Benefits

  • Effective on a Wide Range of Vegetation: Imazapyr can control various types of vegetation, including grasses, broadleaf weeds, and woody plants.
  • Systemic Action: As a systemic herbicide, Imazapyr moves throughout the plant, ensuring thorough control.
  • Long Residual Activity: Imazapyr provides long-term control of unwanted vegetation, reducing the need for frequent reapplications.
  • Post-Emergent and Pre-Emergent Control: It can be used both post-emergence and pre-emergence, offering flexibility in application timing.
