Diuron
Type: Herbicide
Mode of Action: Inhibiting photosynthesis in plants
Common Product Names: Karmex DF, Krovar DF, & Diuron 4L
What is it?
Diuron is a systemic herbicide that belongs to the urea class of herbicides. It is a white, crystalline solid that is highly effective in controlling annual and perennial broadleaf weeds and grasses. Diuron is both a pre-emergent and post-emergent herbicide, making it versatile for use in different stages of weed growth. It is absorbed by the roots and foliage, leading to the inhibition of photosynthesis and eventual plant death. Diuron has a residual activity, meaning it remains active in the soil for an extended period, providing long-term weed control. This makes it particularly useful in areas where repeated applications are impractical.
How does it work?
Diuron works by inhibiting the photosynthesis process in plants. Specifically, it binds to the D1 protein in the photosystem II complex, blocking the electron transport chain essential for converting light energy into chemical energy during photosynthesis. Without this energy, the plant cannot produce the necessary nutrients for growth, leading to the plant's death.
