Spirotetramat

Type: Insecticide

Mode of Action: Inhibiting the enzyme acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC) / Lipid biosynthesis inhibitor (LBI)

Common Product Names: Movento

What is it?

Spirotetramat is a systemic insecticide known for its efficacy in controlling a wide range of harmful sucking insects. It is absorbed by plants and distributed acropetally (upwards) and basipetally (downwards), providing protection to new growth and ensuring thorough coverage. This translaminar and systemic activity makes Spirotetramat a versatile tool in integrated pest management (IPM) programs.

How does it work?

Spirotetramat is absorbed by the plant and translocated to all parts, including leaves, stems, and roots. When insects feed on the treated plant tissues, they ingest the active ingredient. Spirotetramat then inhibits acetyl-CoA carboxylase, an essential enzyme in lipid biosynthesis. This inhibition disrupts the production of lipids, leading to the cessation of growth, development, and reproduction of the target pests. The insects ultimately die from starvation and inability to molt or reproduce.

Benefits

  • Unique Mode of Action: As a lipid biosynthesis inhibitor, it provides an alternative mechanism to other insecticides, helping to manage resistance.
  • Long Residual Activity: Provides extended protection, reducing the need for frequent applications.
  • Systemic Action: Spirotetramat's ability to move throughout the plant ensures comprehensive protection, including new growth.
