Streptomycin
Type: Bactericide
Mode of Action: Inhibiting protein synthesis
Common Product Names: Agri-Mycin 17, Harbour, Firewall
What is it?
Streptomycin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic derived from the soil bacterium Streptomyces griseus. It was the first antibiotic remedy for tuberculosis and has since found extensive use in agriculture due to its effectiveness against a broad spectrum of bacterial pathogens. Streptomycin is typically formulated as a water-soluble powder or liquid for easy application to crops.
How does it work?
Upon application, streptomycin penetrates the plant tissue and targets bacterial cells. By binding to the bacterial ribosome, it interferes with protein synthesis, leading to the inhibition of bacterial growth and eventual cell death. This action helps in controlling and preventing the spread of bacterial diseases in various crops, ensuring healthier and more robust plant development.
