Simazine

Type: Herbicide

Mode of Action: Inhibiting Photosynthesis

Common Product Names: Princep & Sim-Trol

What is it?

Simazine is a white, crystalline solid that is typically applied to soil. It is used both in agricultural and non-agricultural settings to control a wide range of weeds. Its primary use is as a pre-emergent herbicide, meaning it is applied before the weed seeds have a chance to germinate and emerge from the soil.  It can also have some post-emergent activity on very young seedlings. Simazine's effects on weed control are seen as the treated weeds fail to emerge, with results typically visible within a few weeks. This makes it particularly effective for preventing weed establishment in crops like corn, fruit orchards, vineyards, and ornamental plants.

How does it work?

Simazine works by being absorbed by the roots of germinating weeds. Once absorbed, it translocates to the shoots and leaves, where it inhibits photosynthesis. The interruption in the electron transport chain within the chloroplasts leads to the gradual starvation of the plant as it can no longer produce the necessary sugars for growth and development. This process typically results in weed death before they can emerge and compete with the desired plants.

Benefits

  • Effective Pre-emergent Control: Simazine is highly effective in controlling weeds before they emerge, reducing the competition for nutrients, water, and light.
  • Long Residual Activity: Simazine has a relatively long residual activity in the soil, providing extended weed control with a single application.
  • Safe for Various Crops: When used as directed, simazine is safe for a variety of crops, including corn, citrus, and certain ornamentals.
