Chlorsulfuron

Type: Herbicide

Mode of Action: Inhibition of Acetolactate Synthase, Sulfonylureas (HRAC Group 2)

Common Product Names: Glean & Telar XP

What is it?

Chlorsulfuron is a sulfonylurea herbicide developed by DuPont (now Corteva Agriscience). It belongs to Group 2 according to the Herbicide Resistance Action Committee (HRAC). Chlorsulfuron is primarily a systemic herbicide, meaning it is absorbed by plants and transported throughout their tissues. It is selective, primarily targeting broadleaf weeds and some grasses. The primary area of use for Chlorsulfuron is in cereal crops, such as wheat and barley. The use rate is typically low due to its high efficacy.

How does it work?

Chlorsulfuron inhibits the enzyme acetolactate synthase (ALS), which is essential for the synthesis of branched-chain amino acids in plants. By inhibiting this enzyme, Chlorsulfuron disrupts protein synthesis and plant growth, leading to the death of susceptible weeds. The effects of Chlorsulfuron on weeds are generally visible within days to weeks after application, depending on the weed species and environmental conditions.

Benefits

The main benefit of Chlorsulfuron is its long-lasting control of a broad spectrum of weeds, including troublesome species like wild oat, mustard, and pigweed. Its selectivity allows it to be used in cereal crops without harming the crop itself, making it a valuable tool in integrated weed management programs. Additionally, the low use rate of Chlorsulfuron minimizes its environmental impact.
