What is it?

Chlorothalonil is a chloronitrile fungicide first developed by Diamond Alkali Company, which later became part of Syngenta. It belongs to the FRAC Group M5. Chlorothalonil is primarily a contact fungicide and is non-selective, providing broad-spectrum disease control. Its primary areas of use include agriculture, particularly in crops like potatoes, tomatoes, and peanuts, and in turf management for lawns and golf courses. Chlorothalonil is typically applied at a moderate to high rate, depending on the specific disease and crop being treated.

How does it work?

Chlorothalonil disrupts essential cellular processes in fungi by interfering with sulfhydryl-containing enzymes and other proteins. This mode of action leads to the inhibition of spore germination and mycelial growth, effectively controlling the spread of fungal diseases. Due to its multi-site mode of action, the risk of resistance development in fungi is reduced. The visible effects on fungal diseases can usually be observed within a few days to weeks after application.
