Long-Term Pond & Lake Algae Control with Phoslock

Long-Term Pond & Lake Algae Control with

Stop algae at the source by permanently binding phosphorus, not just treating surface growth.

Excess phosphorus fuels recurring algae blooms, poor clarity, and seasonal water-quality problems. Phoslock® provides a long-term, in-lake phosphorus control solution designed to prevent algae at its cause—not react to symptoms on the surface.

Why Algae Returns Every Year

Algae blooms often reappear even after treatment. That’s because most lake systems contain internal phosphorus loads stored in sediments. As temperatures rise—and benthic activity increases—this phosphorus is released back into the water column, fueling new algae growth.

  1. Key phosphorus drivers include:
  2. sediment phosphorus release
  3. watershed runoff
  4. stormwater inflows
  5. nutrient-rich shorelines
  6. warm water stratification
  7. decaying plant biomass

Traditional algaecides treat algae temporarily. Phoslock prevents recurrence.

How Phoslock® Works

Phoslock® is a lanthanum-modified bentonite clay designed to bind free reactive phosphorus (FRP/SRP) permanently. Once bound, phosphorus forms an inert mineral called Rhabdophane, which remains locked within the sediment and does not release under typical lake conditions.

What this means:

  1. Phosphorus is permanently immobilized
  2. algae loses access to primary nutrients
  3. repeated bloom cycles can be broken
  4. long-term clarity and stability improve
  5. chemical dependency is reduced

What Phoslock® Does NOT Do

Phoslock® is not an algaecide and will not kill active algae.
Instead, it prevents future algae by removing the nutrients required for algal growth.

Phoslock® is used after algae is cleared or suppressed, or as a preventative at strategic times of year.

Seasonal Application Strategy

A best-practice approach for ponds, small lakes, golf courses, and managed waterbodies.

Spring – Best Timing & Prevention Phase

Spring applications are the most effective.
Target conditions before significant benthic release begins.

Best practices:

  1. manually remove plant/algae biomass
  2. apply initial algaecide if needed
  3. apply Phoslock once water is visually cleara
  4. pply before warm-water stratification
  5. prevent shoreline phosphorus release

Annual littoral-zone applications are especially effective for golf courses and managed pond systems.

Summer – Maintenance & Post-Algaecide

During warm months, Phoslock® is commonly applied:

  1. after algaecide treatments
  2. after sedimented biomass collapses
  3. after shoreline activity or plant decay

Phoslock adsorbs FRP released from lysed cells, extending the window between algaecide treatments and maintaining water quality through peak growing season.

Fall – Sediment Binding & Reset

Autumn conditions concentrate available phosphorus in sediment, making fall a strong reset opportunity. Bottom-bound phosphorus helps reduce early-season algae pressure the following spring.

Proven Application Methods

Phoslock may be applied as:

  1. slurry (broadcast from boat or shoreline)
  2. direct granule (sediment targeting)
  3. shoreline banding
  4. littoral-zone applications
  5. full-water-column dispersion

Slurry application targets both the water column phosphorus and the sediment release zones.

Granule application focuses on sediment load, consolidation, and long-term phosphorus control.

Shock-N-Lock & Floc-N-Lock Methods

Advanced strategies for professional water managers.

Shock N Lock

GreenClean Pro (or other peroxide-based algaecide) + Phoslock®

  1. minimal impact on water chemistry
  2. effective post-treatment phosphorus binding

Floc N Lock

Buffered Alum (ACH) for flocculation, followed by Phoslock® to permanently bind phosphorus.

  1. reduces ACH impact on pH
  2. locks sediment release pathways
  3. flocculates suspended solids

Compatible Tools & Programs

Phoslock is commonly combined with:

  1. peroxide algaecides (GreenClean Pro, etc.)
  2. ACH / buffered alumdyes and shading systems
  3. aeration equipment
  4. mechanical removal
  5. shoreline vegetation management

This proactive approach reduces chemical dependency and preserves long-term system health.

Who Uses Phoslock®

  1. golf courses
  2. residential lakes
  3. HOAs
  4. fisheries and reservoirs
  5. stormwater retention systems
  6. agricultural ponds
  7. municipal water managers
  8. ponds < 5 acres and large-scale lakes

Phoslock is also NSF-certified for use in potable water systems and drinking-water supply reservoirs.

Why Professionals Choose Phoslock®

  1. permanently binds soluble phosphorus
  2. remains stable under anoxic conditions
  3. does not impact pH
  4. prevents re-release
  5. supports lower long-term chemical use
  6. aligns with ecological lake management practices

By reducing phosphorus availability, Phoslock reduces seasonal algae pressure and the need for repetitive algaecide treatments later in the year.
