Poa Annua Guide

Image Description

Poa Annua, or Annual Bluegrass, is one of the most common grassy weeds in the United States. The seedlings grow throughout the fall and then flower the following spring.

The Poa annua seeds produced in the spring wait patiently in the soil for the cooler temperature of fall to arrive before they sprout. You can stop them from sprouting by applying a pre-emergent weed control product in late summer to early fall.

Identifying Poa Annua

Identifying Poa Annua Header

The first thing you need to know when preventing Poa annua is how to identify it. Poa annua is a grassy, winter weed that can easily be mistaken for other common weeds, so distinguishing it is key.

Poa annua is much greener than your lawn and it grows in clumps. Its leaves are smooth with a pointed tip and feather-like seeds sprout from the ends of its leaves in an almost-white or light green shade, typically in the spring.

Usable Post Emergents Herbicides

Seeing how it is too late in the year to have an effective control on POA with pre-emergents, you are limited to post-emergents to fight POA in your lawn this growing season.

  • ✓ Etho can be used in the fall as a pre-emergent, and in the spring for post-emergent control
  • ✓ Rimsulfuron 25 DF can be used in the spring to control Poa annua

Usable Growth Regulators (IGR)

PGR’s can be used to slow and mitigate Poa growth (Reduce application rate by 50% if poa is greater than 50% of turf)

  • ✓ Growth regulators are a more costly option, but work to help slow the growth of poa. Products such as Prohex 27.5 WDG and Paclo 2SC are great options labeled for suppression of poa annua
  • ✓ Best timing for these applications is fall through late spring

Usable Pre-Emergents

Pre-emergents can be used, but must go down in the early fall.

  • ✓ Specific pre-emergents, based on your type of turf, will be the biggest contributing factor to preventing unwanted annual bluegrass
  • ✓ Cool season pre-emergents such as Cavalcade 4L/65WDG, Resolute 4FL/65WDG, or Prodiamine 4L applied in late summer to early fall will keep winter annuals such as annual bluegrass from germinating in the spring
  • ✓ Warm season pre-emergents such as Specticle FLO and Pronamide 3.3 SC are best applied from early fall through December
