Dandelion & Clover Guide

Description of the image
Description of the image

Common dandelion has a thick fleshy taproot with many-branded crowns, with milky sap, leaves are simple, 3 to 10 inches long.

The stem is very short and wholly underground, producing a rosette of leaves at the ground surface.

The lawn should not be mowed for two or three days before and after herbicide application.

Products to Control Dandelions:

Some preemergence herbicides such as those containing dithiopyr have been effective in managing dandelions. Like all preemergence herbicides, these must be applied to the soil before the seeds germinate.

If dandelions are problematic in the spring, dandelion control can be optimized in the cooler months by using ester formulations of broadleaf herbicides or by using Florasulam.

Carfentrazone (such as Addit) has shown promise for quick burndown and control of small dandelion seedlings.

Dandelion control can be achieved with 2,4D or 3 way herbicides such as Triad Select.

Infestations of white clover can be reduced by improving turf density through good establishment procedures and the use of turfgrasses well-adapted to site conditions.

White clover is more likely to form large patches in the turf that is not adequately fertilized with nitrogen.

White clover is very competitive in low fertility sites because it, like other legumes, hosts rhizobacteria that fix atmospheric nitrogen into plant available nitrogen.

Products to control Clover:

Both established annual and perennial clovers can be controlled with post emergent herbicides.

This weed is best controlled by herbicides containing Dicamba, Triclopyr, Clopyralid, Fluroxypyr.
