Topramezone

Type: Herbicide

Mode of Action: Inhibiting the enzyme 4-hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase (HPPD)

Common Product Names: Armezon, Impact, Pylex

What is it?

Topramezone is a selective post-emergence herbicide, meaning it is applied after the weeds have emerged from the soil. It is particularly effective against a wide range of broadleaf and grass weeds, making it a valuable tool for farmers, turf management, and gardeners aiming to protect their crops from invasive plant species. Developed by BASF, Topramezone is known for its high efficacy and versatility in various climatic conditions.

How does it work?

Topramezone is absorbed by the leaves of the target weeds and then translocated throughout the plant. Once inside, it inhibits the HPPD enzyme, disrupting the plant's ability to produce carotenoids. Without these pigments, chlorophyll is unprotected and degrades under light exposure, leading to a loss of photosynthetic capability. The affected weeds exhibit bleaching and ultimately die due to the lack of energy production and protective pigments.

Benefits

  •  Resistance Management: Offers an alternative mode of action that can be integrated into herbicide resistance management programs.
  • Selective Action: Targets weeds without harming the desired crops, particularly useful in corn and other major crop systems.
  • Post-Emergence Application: Can be applied after weeds have emerged, providing flexibility in weed management strategies.
