Thifensulfuron-methyl

Type: Herbicide

Mode of Action: Inhibiting the enzyme acetolactate synthase (ALS)

Common Product Names: Affinty & Harmony

What is it?

Thifensulfuron-methyl is a selective, post-emergence herbicide used to manage a wide range of broadleaf weeds in crops. It is valued for its effectiveness at low application rates and its ability to integrate into various crop management systems. The herbicide is absorbed by the foliage and roots of the plants, ensuring comprehensive control.

How does it work?

Upon application, Thifensulfuron-methyl is taken up by the weed's leaves and roots. It then translocates to the growing points of the plant, where it inhibits the ALS enzyme. This inhibition prevents the plant from synthesizing essential amino acids needed for growth and protein synthesis. As a result, the targeted weeds stop growing and eventually die, typically within a few weeks of application.

Benefits

  • Selective Weed Control: Thifensulfuron-methyl selectively targets broadleaf weeds without harming the crop, making it ideal for integrated pest management.
  • Low Application Rates: It is effective at low dosages, which reduces the amount of chemical used and minimizes environmental impact.
  • Flexible Application Timing: It can be applied post-emergence, allowing farmers to target weeds that have already emerged and ensuring timely control.
