Saflufenacil

Type: Herbicide

Mode of Action: Inhibiting the enzyme protoporphyrinogen oxidase (PPO)

Common Product Names: Sharpen & Verdict

What is it?

Saflufenacil is a highly effective herbicide used to control a broad spectrum of broadleaf weeds in a variety of crops, including soybeans, corn, and cereals. It is known for its fast-acting properties, providing visible results within hours of application. Saflufenacil is often used in pre-plant, pre-emergent, and post-emergent weed control programs, making it versatile and highly valued in integrated weed management strategies.

How does it work?

The herbicide works by penetrating the weed’s leaves and disrupting critical processes at the cellular level. This enzyme is crucial for the synthesis of chlorophyll in plants. Specifically, saflufenacil inhibits the PPO enzyme, leading to the accumulation of protoporphyrin IX, a phototoxic molecule. In the presence of light, protoporphyrin IX generates reactive oxygen species that cause rapid cell membrane destruction. This results in the quick desiccation and death of the targeted weeds.

Benefits

  • Rapid Action: Saflufenacil delivers visible results quickly, often within hours of application, allowing for timely weed control and minimal competition with crops.
  • Broad Spectrum Control: Effective against a wide range of broadleaf weeds, saflufenacil helps maintain cleaner fields and better crop yields.
  • Reduced Resistance: By utilizing a unique mode of action, saflufenacil helps mitigate the risk of herbicide resistance in weed populations.
