Prosulfuron
Type: Herbicide
Mode of Action: Inhibiting the enzyme acetolactate synthase (ALS)
Common Product Names: Spirit
What is it?
Prosulfuron is a selective, systemic herbicide utilized primarily in crops such as maize (corn) and small grains. It is effective at low application rates and is known for its ability to control a wide range of broadleaf weeds and some grasses. This herbicide is usually applied post-emergence, meaning it is applied after the weeds have emerged from the soil, although it can also be effective in some pre-emergence scenarios.
How does it work?
Prosulfuron is absorbed by the leaves and roots of the target weeds. It translocates to the growing points of the plants, where it inhibits the ALS enzyme. This action prevents the plant from synthesizing vital amino acids, leading to halted growth and eventual plant death. Visible effects on weeds can be seen within days, with full control achieved in about two weeks.
