Pronamide

Type: Herbicide

Mode of Action: Inhibiting the cell division in the meristematic region of plants

Common Product Names: Kerb

What is it?

Pronamide, chemically known as 3,5-dichloro-N-(1,1-dimethyl-2-propynyl)benzamide, is a pre-emergent and post-emergent herbicide. It is highly effective against a variety of annual grasses and some broadleaf weeds. Due to its selective nature, Pronamide can be used in crops like lettuce, alfalfa, and various ornamentals without harming the desired plants.

How does it work?

Pronamide interferes with the microtubule assembly in plants, which is crucial for cell division and elongation. By inhibiting microtubule polymerization, Pronamide prevents weed seeds from germinating and emerging, as well as controlling the growth of already emerged weeds. It is typically applied to the soil where it is absorbed by the roots and translocated to the meristematic tissues.

Benefits

  • Selective Action: Safe for use in many crops and ornamentals.
  • Flexible Application: Can be used as both pre-emergent and post-emergent herbicide.
  • Long-Lasting Residual Activity: Provides extended weed control, reducing the need for frequent reapplication.
