Piperonyl Butoxide (PBO)

Type: Insecticide

Mode of Action: Inhibiting the enzymes in insects that detoxify insecticides

Common Product Names: SynerPro PBO

What is it?

Piperonyl Butoxide is a synthetic compound derived from safrole, an organic substance found in sassafras oil. It was first developed in the 1940s and has since become a critical component in many insecticide formulations. Although PBO itself does not have insecticidal properties, its role as a synergist is vital for enhancing the potency and spectrum of insecticides, particularly pyrethrins and pyrethroids.

How does it work?

PBO works by interfering with the metabolic processes of insects. When combined with an insecticide, it inhibits the insect's ability to produce enzymes that would normally break down the insecticide. This leads to prolonged exposure and increased susceptibility of the insect to the insecticide, resulting in more effective pest control.

Benefits

  • Enhanced Efficacy: PBO significantly increases the effectiveness of insecticides, leading to better pest control.
  • Cost-Effective: Enhancing insecticides with PBO can reduce the amount of active insecticidal ingredient needed, potentially lowering costs.
  • Resistance Management: PBO can help manage insect resistance by ensuring that insecticides remain effective over time.
  • Rapid Results: Insecticides combined with PBO tend to act quickly, often showing results within hours to days.
