Oxyfluorfen

Type: Herbicide

Mode of Action: Inhibiting the enzyme protoporphyrinogen oxidase (PPO)

Common Product Names: Goal, OxyStar

What is it?

Oxyfluorfen is a diphenyl ether herbicide, primarily used for pre-emergent and post-emergent control of a wide range of broadleaf and grassy weeds. It is applied to crops such as soybeans, cotton, and various vegetables. This herbicide is valued for its long-lasting residual control, providing extended protection against weed emergence.

How does it work?

When applied to weeds, oxyfluorfen disrupts the synthesis of chlorophyll by inhibiting the PPO enzyme. This leads to the build-up of toxic compounds within the plant cells, causing cell membranes to rupture and ultimately resulting in plant death. Oxyfluorfen is effective both as a pre-emergent herbicide, preventing weed seeds from germinating, and as a post-emergent herbicide, killing weeds that have already emerged.

Benefits

  • Dual Action: Functions as both a pre-emergent and post-emergent herbicide.
  • Long-Lasting Residual Control: Provides extended weed control, reducing the need for frequent reapplications.
  • Efficiency: Quick action, with visible results often seen within a few days of application.
