Nicosulfuron

Type: Herbicide

Mode of Action: Inhibiting the enzyme acetolactate synthase (ALS)

Common Product Names: Accent, Pastora, Steadfast

What is it?

Nicosulfuron is a selective herbicide used primarily in the control of annual and perennial grass weeds, as well as certain broadleaf weeds, in corn crops. It is highly effective at low application rates, which minimizes environmental impact. The herbicide is absorbed through the foliage and roots of the weeds, and it is translocated throughout the plant, leading to a systemic effect.

How does it work?

Once absorbed, nicosulfuron inhibits the ALS enzyme, halting the production of essential amino acids needed for plant growth and survival. This biochemical disruption results in stunted growth, chlorosis (yellowing of leaves), and eventually, the death of the weed. The herbicide is effective on a wide range of weed species, including some that are resistant to other types of herbicides.

Benefits

  • Selective Weed Control: Targets specific weeds without harming corn crops.
  • Low Application Rates: Requires only small amounts for effective control, reducing chemical load on the environment.
  • Systemic Action: Absorbed and translocated throughout the plant, ensuring comprehensive weed control.
