What is it?

Mesotrione is a selective, systemic herbicide derived from the natural compound leptospermone, found in the bottlebrush plant. It is predominantly used in corn and turfgrass management but is also applicable in other crops like sorghum and sugarcane. Mesotrione is known for its post-emergent and pre-emergent activity, meaning it can be applied both before and after weeds have emerged.

How does it work?

Mesotrione works by being absorbed through the leaves, shoots, and roots of the plants. Once inside, it moves to the site of action and inhibits the HPPD enzyme, leading to the breakdown of chlorophyll and carotenoids. The affected plants display symptoms such as whitening or bleaching of the leaves, followed by necrosis and death. Results from mesotrione application can typically be seen within a few days, with complete weed control occurring within a few weeks.
