MCPP (Mecoprop)

Type: Herbicide

Mode of Action: Mimicking the plant hormone auxin

Common Product Names: Powerzone & Mecoturf

What is it?

Mecoprop (MCPP) is a selective postemergent, systemic herbicide belonging to the phenoxy herbicide group. It is commonly used to control a wide range of broadleaf weeds, such as dandelions, chickweed, and clover, in lawns, turf, and certain crop fields. MCPP is absorbed by the leaves and roots of weeds, allowing it to translocate throughout the plant and exert its herbicidal effects.

How does it work?

MCPP works by mimicking the natural plant hormone auxin, which is crucial for plant growth and development. When applied, MCPP causes the plant to grow in an uncontrolled and unsustainable manner. This abnormal growth exhausts the plant's energy reserves and disrupts essential physiological processes, ultimately leading to the plant's death. Results from MCPP application are typically seen within a few days to a couple of weeks, depending on environmental conditions and the specific weed species.

Benefits

  • Selective Herbicide: Targets broadleaf weeds without harming grasses, making it ideal for lawns and turf.
  • Systemic Action: Absorbed by leaves and roots, ensuring thorough weed control.
  • Visible Results: Effects can be seen within a few days to weeks.
