Imidacloprid

Type: Insecticide

Mode of Action: Neonicotinod, Disruption of nervous system

Common Product Names: Admire & Merit

What is it?

Imidacloprid is a systemic insecticide belonging to the neonicotinoid class of chemicals. Developed in the 1990s, it has become one of the most widely used insecticides globally due to its effectiveness and broad-spectrum activity against various insect pests. It is utilized in agriculture, horticulture, turfgrass, and veterinary applications to protect crops and animals from harmful insects.

How does it work?

Imidacloprid is absorbed by the plant or animal it is applied to and is then translocated throughout the tissues. When insects ingest or come into contact with the treated plant or animal, the imidacloprid binds to their nicotinic acetylcholine receptors. This binding prevents the normal transmission of nerve impulses, causing the insects to become paralyzed and die.

Benefits

  • Systemic Action: Its systemic nature allows it to be absorbed by plants and distributed throughout their tissues, offering comprehensive protection.
  • Long-Lasting: Imidacloprid provides residual control, meaning it remains active for an extended period, reducing the need for frequent reapplications.
  • Quick Results: Often, results can be seen within hours to a few days after application, depending on the target pest and conditions.
