Halosulfuron-methyl
Type: Herbicide
Mode of Action: Inhibiting the enzyme acetolactate synthase (ALS)
Common Product Names: Sedgehammer & Permit
What is it?
Halosulfuron-methyl is a selective herbicide known for its efficacy against tough weeds like nutsedge and broadleaf species. It is widely used in both agricultural and non-agricultural settings, such as lawns, golf courses, and other turf areas. It is commonly used in turfgrasses to remove nutsedge without harming the grass. The compound is renowned for its low use rates and high level of safety for desirable plants when used as directed.
How does it work?
This herbicide is absorbed by the leaves, shoots, and roots of weeds. Once inside the plant, it inhibits the acetolactate synthase enzyme, disrupting the biosynthesis of branched-chain amino acids like valine, leucine, and isoleucine. This disruption halts cell division and plant growth, leading to the eventual death of the targeted weed.
