Diphacinone
Type: Rodenticide
Mode of Action: Interfering with the blood-clotting process in rodents
Common Product Names: Ka-Put
What is it?
Diphacinone is a first-generation anticoagulant rodenticide. It is part of a group of chemicals known as indandiones. Diphacinone is highly effective against a wide range of rodent species, making it a preferred choice in both urban and rural pest management programs. Unlike some newer anticoagulants, Diphacinone often requires multiple feedings over several days for effectiveness, reducing the risk of secondary poisoning in non-target animals.
How does it work?
When rodents consume bait containing Diphacinone, the active ingredient disrupts their ability to recycle Vitamin K, which is necessary for blood clotting. Over time, usually within 5 to 7 days, the affected rodents suffer from internal bleeding. As the blood clotting process becomes impaired, even minor injuries can lead to fatal hemorrhages. This slow mode of action is crucial in ensuring that the rodents do not associate their symptoms with the bait, allowing for effective control of the population.
