Cyazofamid

Type: Fungicide

Mode of Action: Inhibiting the production of ATP

Common Product Names: Segway

What is it?

Cyazofamid is a modern fungicide known for its high efficacy against Oomycete pathogens. It is widely used in both agricultural and horticultural settings to protect crops such as potatoes, tomatoes, cucurbits, and grapes from devastating diseases like late blight, downy mildew, and root rot. The active ingredient was first developed and introduced in the early 2000s and has since become a critical component in integrated pest management (IPM) strategies due to its targeted action and relatively low environmental impact. Cyazofamid is primarily used as a preventative fungicide. When applied before the onset of disease, it creates a protective barrier on the plant surface, preventing the pathogen from establishing itself. In some cases, it may also offer curative benefits if applied at the very early stages of infection.

How does it work?

Cyazofamid targets and inhibits the Q_i site of the cytochrome bc1 complex in the mitochondria of susceptible fungi. By disrupting this site, the fungicide effectively halts the production of ATP, which is vital for the survival and proliferation of the pathogen. This mechanism of action is particularly effective against Oomycetes, making Cyazofamid a specialized tool in the fight against diseases caused by these pathogens.

Benefits

  • Highly Effective Against Oomycetes: Cyazofamid provides targeted control of Oomycete pathogens, which are responsible for some of the most damaging crop diseases.
  • Preventative Action: Best used as a preventative fungicide, it helps to avoid infection before it starts, ensuring healthier crops.
  • Residual Protection: Offers long-lasting protection, reducing the need for frequent reapplications.
