Clothianidin

Type: Insecticide

Mode of Action: Disrupts the nervous system / Disrupts nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs)

Common Product Names: Arena 50 WDG & Belay

What is it?

Clothianidin is a systemic insecticide, meaning it is absorbed by plants and transported throughout their tissues. This characteristic allows it to protect the entire plant, including new growth, from insect pests. It is particularly effective against sucking and chewing insects, such as aphids, thrips, and some beetles. As a member of the neonicotinoid family, Clothianidin is related to nicotine and works by affecting the nervous system of insects. It is commonly used in both agricultural and non-agricultural settings, including turf management and ornamental plant care. Clothianidin is known for its residual activity, meaning it provides long-lasting protection after application. This makes it an excellent choice for season-long pest control.

How does it work?

Once Clothianidin is applied to the soil or plants, it is taken up by the roots and distributed throughout the plant's tissues. When pests ingest or come into contact with the treated plant, Clothianidin binds to the nicotinic acetylcholine receptors in their nervous system. This binding leads to continuous nerve stimulation, eventually causing paralysis and death.

Benefits

  • Long Residual Activity: Offers extended protection, reducing the need for frequent reapplications.
  • Systemic Action: Protects the entire plant, including new growth.
  • Low Application Rates: Requires only small amounts to achieve effective pest control, making it cost-efficient.
  • Fast-Acting: Results are typically seen within hours to a few days after application.
