Clomazone

Type: Herbicide

Mode of Action: Inhibition of Deoxy-D-Xylulose Phosphate Synthase, Isoxazolidinone (HRAC Group 13)

Common Product Names: Command & Caravel

What is it?

Clomazone was developed by FMC Corporation and belongs to the isoxazolidinone class of herbicides. It is categorized under Group 13 by the Herbicide Resistance Action Committee (HRAC). Clomazone functions as a pre-emergent herbicide and is mostly used as a soil-applied treatment. It is selective, targeting a broad range of grass and broadleaf weeds. The primary areas of use for Clomazone include soybeans, canola, peas, and tobacco, among other crops. The use rate of Clomazone typically ranges from low to moderate.

How does it work?

Clomazone inhibits the synthesis of carotenoids in plants, which are pigments responsible for protecting chlorophyll from photodegradation. Without these pigments, chlorophyll is destroyed by sunlight, which disrupts the process of photosynthesis, leading to the bleaching and death of susceptible weed seedlings. The visible effects of Clomazone on weeds are usually noticeable within a few weeks after application, as weeds start to emerge but then fail to develop properly.

Benefits

The key benefit of Clomazone is its broad-spectrum weed control, which helps manage various grasses and broadleaf weeds in a range of crops. This can significantly contribute to higher yields and better crop quality. Its pre-emergent nature allows for early season weed control, reducing competition for nutrients, water, and light between crops and weeds.
