Bifenthrin

Type: Insecticide

Mode of Action: Disruption of Nervous system / sodium channels

Common Product Names: Brigade & Talstar

What is it?

Bifenthrin is a synthetic pyrethroid insecticide used to manage a broad spectrum of insect pests. Bifenthrin is primarily a contact insecticide, although it has some stomach poison action. It is non-selective, targeting a wide range of insect pests.  It is effective against ants, spiders, roaches, ticks, fleas, and other insects. This active ingredient is known for its long residual effect, making it a preferred choice for both indoor and outdoor pest control. Bifenthrin is available in various formulations, including liquid concentrates, granules, and aerosol sprays, allowing for flexible application methods. Bifenthrin is used in various settings, including agriculture, turf management, and residential pest control. It is typically applied at a low to moderate rate.

How does it work?

Bifenthrin works by disrupting the nervous system of insects. It binds to the sodium channels in the nerve cells, prolonging the opening of these channels and causing an influx of sodium ions. This results in the overstimulation of the nervous system, leading to paralysis and death of the insect. Due to its mode of action, Bifenthrin is highly effective at controlling insect populations. The effects on pests can be observed within hours to days after application, depending on the pest species and environmental conditions.

Benefits

  • Long Residual Effect: Bifenthrin remains active for an extended period, providing ongoing protection against pests.
  • Broad-Spectrum Control: Effective against a wide range of insect pests, making it versatile for various settings.
  • Quick Knockdown: Visible results are often seen within hours of application as insects quickly succumb to its effects.
