Bifenazate

Type: Insecticide

Mode of Action: Disruption of the Nervous System

Common Product Names: Acramite & Enervate

What is it?

Bifenazate is a miticide that offers effective control against a wide range of mite species, including the two-spotted spider mite, red spider mite, and various other phytophagous (plant-feeding) mites. Bifenazate is a contact insecticide, meaning it must come into direct contact with the pests to be effective. It is selective, particularly targeting mites, and is widely used in various agricultural settings, including in the cultivation of fruits, vegetables, ornamentals, and in greenhouse operations. Bifenazate is valued for its quick action and relatively low toxicity to non-target organisms, making it a safer choice for integrated pest management (IPM) programs.

How does it work?

Bifenazate acts quickly on mites, causing them to stop feeding almost immediately upon contact. The paralysis effect sets in within a few hours, leading to the death of the mites within a few days. This miticide is both contact and stomach poison, meaning that it can affect mites through direct contact with the spray or ingestion of treated plant material. Its mode of action involves inhibiting the mitochondrial electron transport chain at the complex III site, which leads to the cessation of ATP production, essential for energy in mites.

Benefits

  • Rapid Action: Mites stop feeding almost immediately, with visible results within hours.
  • Long-Lasting Residual Effect: Provides extended protection, ensuring that treated areas remain mite-free for several weeks.
  • Low Toxicity to Beneficial Insects: Safer for use in environments where beneficial insects are present, supporting IPM strategies.
