Azoxystrobin
Type: Fungicide
Mode of Action: Inhibiting mitochondrial respiration
Common Product Names: Abound, Heritage, & Quadris
What is it?
Azoxystrobin is a systemic fungicide belonging to the strobilurin chemical class. Azoxystrobin is primarily used as a preventative fungicide, though it also offers curative properties. It is known for its broad-spectrum activity against a wide range of fungal pathogens affecting crops like cereals, vegetables, fruits, and ornamentals. Azoxystrobin is typically applied as a foliar spray but can also be used as a seed treatment. Azoxystrobin can start showing effects within a few days of application, with significant disease control observed within a week. It provides long-lasting residual control, offering protection for several weeks depending on environmental conditions and disease pressure.
How does it work?
Azoxystrobin is absorbed by the plant and translocated to various parts, providing internal protection. When applied, it quickly penetrates the plant tissue and starts inhibiting the mitochondrial respiration of the fungi. It binds to the Qo site of cytochrome b in mitochondrial complex III, blocking electron transfer. This action disrupts ATP production, which is vital for fungal growth and reproduction. This leads to energy depletion in fungal cells, preventing them from growing and spreading.
