Acibenzolar-S-methyl
Type: Fungicide
Mode of Action: Mimics a natural plant hormone, salicylic acid, which is involved in the plant's defense system
Common Product Names: Actigard
What is it?
Acibenzolar-S-methyl is a synthetic analog of salicylic acid, a natural plant hormone involved in regulating plant defenses. Unlike traditional pesticides that directly target pests or pathogens, Acibenzolar-S-methyl enhances the plant's innate immunity, allowing it to better withstand attacks from a variety of pathogens. This active ingredient is especially valued in integrated pest management (IPM) programs where reducing the use of conventional chemical pesticides is a priority.
How does it work?
When Acibenzolar-S-methyl is applied to plants, it is absorbed and translocated throughout the plant tissues. Once inside, it triggers the production of defense-related proteins and other biochemical changes that prepare the plant to resist infections. This response, known as systemic acquired resistance (SAR), is similar to an immune response in animals. It is a preventative measure rather than a curative one, meaning it is most effective when applied before the onset of disease.
