Acephate
Type: Insecticide
Mode of Action: Inhibiting the enzyme acetylcholinesterase (AChE) in the nervous system
Common Product Names: Acephate & Orthene
What is it?
Acephate is a systemic, water-soluble insecticide that is absorbed by plant tissues. It is primarily used to target and eliminate a wide range of insects, including aphids, thrips, and whiteflies. Due to its systemic nature, Acephate is effective both when applied directly to plants and when used as a soil treatment. The compound is typically available in various formulations, including soluble powders, granules, and liquid concentrates. Acephate provides short-term protection but can have residual effects depending on the concentration used and environmental factors. Depending on the target pest and environmental conditions, the effects of Acephate can be observed within 24 to 72 hours after application.
How does it work?
Acephate works by inhibiting cholinesterase, an enzyme essential for the proper functioning of the nervous systems of insects. By disrupting this enzyme, Acephate causes an accumulation of acetylcholine, leading to continuous nerve impulse transmission, which eventually causes paralysis and death in the targeted insects. Acephate operates through a systematic approach, being absorbed by the plant and then moving through the plant’s vascular system. When pests feed on the treated plants, they ingest the active ingredient. The inhibition of acetylcholinesterase causes overstimulation of the nervous system, leading to the insects' death.
