# Product to Water ratio

One of the most commonly asked questions is how much product do I add to my sprayer.

There are lots of guides out there that can be overwhelming.  The truth is there are a lot of variables that go in to spraying. Pressure, nozzle type, width of spray pattern, volume of spray coming out of spray gun, turf type, temperature, health of turf sprayed, fertilizer used, type of pesticide (herbicide / insecticide / fungicide ), your personal average walking speed are all important. Knowing these variables and calibrating your sprayer can save a lot of time and possible accidental injury to off target species when spraying.

But all you want to know is the simple product to water oz/gal ratio!

Well without knowing your particular sprayers calibration or any of these other variables we will have to make some assumptions.

1 Acre = 43560 Square Feet

Rounded up to the nearest thousandth = 44000 Square Feet

So let’s assume…

Sprayers typically range from 1-3 Gallons per 1000 square feet.

At that range you would need 44 – 132 gallons per acre.

Your product calls for 1 Quart per Acre.

You would put 1 Quart (32 Fluid Ounces) in 44-132 gallons of water to spray one acre (43560 sq. ft.).

At half an acre.

You would put 0.5 Quart (16 Fluid Ounces) in 22-66 gallons of water to spray half an acre.

At 5500 Square feet.

You would put 0.125 Quart per (4 Fluid Ounces) in 5.5-16.5 gallons of water to spray 1/8 of an acre (5445 sq. ft.).

The oz of product / water ratio then would be 1 Fl. Oz. of product per 1.375 - 4.125 gallons of water.

The Math

5.5 gallons of water divided by 4 fluid ounces of product is 1.375 gallons of water per 1 fluid ounce of product. This is at a 1 gallon per 1000 square feet rate or 44 gallons per acre.

16.5 gallons of water divided by 4 fluid ounces of product is 4.125 gallons of water per 1 fluid ounce of product. This is at a 3 gallon per 1000 square feet rate or 132 gallons per acre.

22 gallons of water divided by 16 fluid ounces of product is 1.375 gallons of water per 1 fluid ounce of product. This is at a 1 gallon per 1000 square feet rate or 44 gallons per acre.

66 gallons of water divided by 16 fluid ounces of product is 4.125 gallons of water per 1 fluid ounce of product. This is at a 3 gallon per 1000 square feet rate or 132 gallons per acre.

44 gallons of water divided by 32 fluid ounces of product is 1.375 gallons of water per 1 fluid ounce of product. This is at a 1 gallon per 1000 square feet rate or 44 gallons per acre.

132 Gallons of water divided by 32 fluid ounces of product is 4.125 gallons of water per 1 fluid ounce of product. This is at a 3 gallon per 1000 square feet rate or 132 gallons per acre.

These above examples can be used to find your likely product to water ratio by simply changing out the quart per acre for your per acre amount found on the label. Here is another example using pints.

Your product calls for 1 Pint per acre

You would put 1 Pint (16 Fluid Ounces) in 44-132 gallons of water to spray one acre (43560 sq. ft.).

At half an acre.

You would put 0.5 Pint (8 Fluid Ounces) in 22-66 gallons of water to spray half an acre  (21780 sq. ft.).

At 5500 Square feet.

You would put 0.125 Pint per (2 Fluid Ounces) in 5.5-16.5 gallons of water to spray 1/8 of an acre (5445 sq. ft.)

The oz of product / water ratio then would be 1 Fl. Oz. of product per 2.75 - 8.25 gallons of water.

The Math

5.5 gallons of water divided by 2 fluid ounces of product is 2.75 gallons of water per 1 fluid ounce of product. This is at a 1 gallon per 1000 square feet rate or 44 gallons per acre.

16.5 gallons of water divided by 2 fluid ounces of product is 8.25 gallons of water per 1 fluid ounce of product. This is at a 3 gallon per 1000 square feet rate or 132 gallons per acre.

22 gallons of water divided by 8 fluid ounces of product is 2.75 gallons of water per 1 fluid ounce of product. This is at a 1 gallon per 1000 square feet rate or 44 gallons per acre.

66 gallons of water divided by 8 fluid ounces of product is 8.25 gallons of water per 1 fluid ounce of product. This is at a 3 gallon per 1000 square feet rate or 132 gallons per acre.

44 gallons of water divided by 16 fluid ounces of product is 2.75 gallons of water per 1 fluid ounce of product. This is at a 1 gallon per 1000 square feet rate or 44 gallons per acre.

132 Gallons of water divided by 16 fluid ounces of product is 8.25 gallons of water per 1 fluid ounce of product. This is at a 3 gallon per 1000 square feet rate or 132 gallons per acre.

Conversions:

Gallon = 128 Fl. Oz.

Half Gallon = 64 Fl. Oz.

Quart = 32 Fl. Oz.

Pint = 16 Fl. Oz.

Tablespoon = 0.5 Fl. Oz.
