Beech Leaf Disease (BLD)

WHY ARE BEECH TREES IMPORTANT?

Beech trees have a wide-spreading canopy that provides great shade in the summer and beautiful bronze coloring in the fall. Beech trees are often used in parks, golf courses, acreages, and the forestry industry. Beech trees also produce a nut called beechnuts which are a good source of food for wildlife that is rich in fats and proteins. Not only do beech trees provide a source of nutrients for animals, the leaves can be used as a salad vegetable and the nuts are also safe for human consumption in small quantities.

WHAT IS BEECH LEAF DISEASE:

  • Since Beech Leaf Disease (BLD) was first detected in Ohio in 2012, it has now been found in 12 states and one Canadian province, Ontario. It is infecting beech in all New England states except Vermont. BLD was first found in Connecticut in 2019, and in 2020 it was found in Rhode Island and Massachusetts.
  • Beech leaf disease is caused by a foliar nematode, Litylenchus crenatae ssp. mccannii.
  • While there is no information on where the nematodes come from or how it spreads so quickly, there is belief that birds are likely involved in spreading and transporting the nematodes.
