Ag Pre-Emergent Herbicides
WHY USE PRE-EMERGENT HERBICIDES ON YOUR FARM?
Pre-emergent herbicides prevent weed germination, conserving nutrients for crops and improving yields. They reduce the need for manual weeding and additional herbicides, saving time and resources. By minimizing weed competition, these herbicides enhance fertilizer efficiency, lower the risk of herbicide resistance, and promote better soil health.
WHAT ARE PRE-EMERGENT HERBICIDES AND HOW DO THEY WORK?
Pre-emergent herbicides create a barrier in the soil, hindering weed germination by blocking key protein production and root development. Once activated, they consistently control weeds, with effectiveness unimpacted by weather. They should be applied before weed seeds germinate, generally when soil temperatures reach about 50-55 degrees Fahrenheit (10-13 degrees Celsius). See spring soil temperature map below.
