Trifluralin

Type: Herbicide

Mode of Action: Inhibiting cell division in the root tips of plants

Common Product Names: Treflan

What is it?

Trifluralin is an herbicide. It is specifically used to control a wide range of annual grasses and broadleaf weeds. As a pre-emergent herbicide, it is applied to the soil to inhibit the germination of weed seeds. Trifluralin is a yellow-orange crystalline solid with a mild chemical odor. It is non-systemic, meaning it does not get absorbed by plant tissues or translocate within the plant. Instead, its action is confined to the soil where it prevents the emergence of weed seedlings. Trifluralin is commonly used in agricultural settings, home gardens, and landscapes to manage unwanted weeds.

How does it work?

When applied to the soil, Trifluralin creates a chemical barrier at the soil surface. As weed seeds begin to germinate, the developing root tips absorb the herbicide. Trifluralin then disrupts the formation of microtubules, essential components needed for cell division. Without proper cell division, the root growth is halted, preventing the weed from establishing and emerging from the soil.

Benefits

  • Soil Activity: Its action in the soil means that it remains effective even if weed seeds are present below the surface.
  • Non-Systemic: As a non-systemic herbicide, Trifluralin does not get absorbed or move within plants, reducing the risk of damage to nearby crops or plants.
  • Long-Lasting: Trifluralin provides extended control, helping to maintain weed-free conditions for a significant period after application.
  • Economic Benefits: By reducing the need for repeated applications and other weed control measures, Trifluralin can save time and money for growers and gardeners.
  • Pre-Emergent Action: By preventing weed emergence, Trifluralin reduces the competition for nutrients, water, and light between weeds and crops or desired plants.
