Sulfosulfuron
Type: Herbicide
Mode of Action: Inhibiting the enzyme acetolactate synthase (ALS)
Common Product Names: Outrider & Certainty
What is it?
Sulfosulfuron is a systemic herbicide, meaning it is absorbed and translocated throughout the plant, ensuring comprehensive weed control. It is primarily used in agricultural and turf settings. In agriculture it is used particularly for the management of weeds in cereal crops like wheat and barley. Sulfosulfuron is also effective in non-crop areas, such as industrial sites and turf management to remove johnsongrass and nutsedge.
How does it work?
Once applied, sulfosulfuron is absorbed by the foliage and roots of the target weeds. It then moves within the plant to meristematic regions, the growing points, where it inhibits the ALS enzyme. This inhibition prevents the production of essential amino acids, leading to the cessation of cell division and growth, chlorosis (yellowing of leaves), and ultimately plant death. . Consequently, the weeds gradually wilt and die, typically within a few weeks of application.
