Propanil
Type: Herbicide
Mode of Action: Inhibiting photosynthesis
Common Product Names: Stam
What is it?
Propanil, chemically known as 3',4'-Dichloropropionanilide, is a post-emergent herbicide primarily used in rice cultivation. It is known for its effectiveness in controlling a wide range of grass and broadleaf weeds. Available in various formulations, Propanil is typically applied as a foliar spray. Results from Propanil application are generally visible within a few days, with full weed control achieved within one to two weeks.
How does it work?
Propanil is applied post-emergence, meaning it is effective on weeds that have already germinated and are actively growing. Once applied, Propanil is absorbed by the leaves of the weeds. It then moves to the chloroplasts, where it inhibits the photosynthetic process by binding to the photosystem II complex. This inhibition prevents the conversion of light energy into chemical energy, leading to the depletion of the weed's energy reserves and ultimately causing its death.
