Primisulfuron-methyl
Type: Herbicide
Mode of Action: Inhibiting the enzyme acetolactate synthase (ALS)
Common Product Names: Beacon, Northstar, Spirit
What is it?
Primisulfuron-methyl is a sulfonylurea herbicide that is highly effective in controlling broadleaf and some grass weeds. It is primarily used in corn crops but has applications in other cereals and some specialty crops. Due to its selective nature, it can be applied without harming the desired crop, making it a valuable tool in integrated weed management programs.
How does it work?
After application, Primisulfuron-methyl is absorbed by the foliage and roots of the weeds. It then translocates to the growing points where it inhibits ALS. As this enzyme is pivotal for the synthesis of valine, leucine, and isoleucine, its inhibition results in the plant's inability to produce proteins essential for growth and development. Visible symptoms, such as yellowing and stunting of the weeds, are typically observed within a few days to a week, with complete control achieved within 2-3 weeks.
